Valentine’s Special: Red Velvet Cake Recipe

Red velvet cake can be enjoyed as a wonderful dessert with your family.

Not all red cakes are red velvet cakes.

Yes, the cake should be red but for it to be called a red velvet, it should have good quality cocoa powder. This is to give the cake a subtle chocolate taste.


  • 2 ½ cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of butter
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt
  • 1½ teaspoon of baking powder
  • ¼ cup of cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons of red food colouring
  • 1½ cup of sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla flavor
  • 1 cup of milk

For the icing

  • 3 cups of icing sugar
  • 1 cup of butter
  • 1 cup of liquid milk
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla flavour
A Red Velvet Cake makes the heart young again and wipes out the years.


  • Preheat your Oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • In a large bowl sift all your dry ingredients ( Flour, Baking powder, Salt and Cocoa Powder).
  • In another bowl, cream the butter with sugar until it is light and fluffy. OR, you can use your cake mixer to mix your butter and sugar.
  • Add the eggs, butter and sugar mixture, red food colour and milk.
  • Whisk together until it is evenly combined.
  • Divide the cake batter into two greased cake pans.
  • Bake for 30 minutes OR till an inserted toothpick comes out clean from the cake.

N/B: The cake should be cool before you begin icing it.

To Make Icing:

  • In a mixing bowl add in butter, half of icing sugar and milk .
  • On a medium high speed, blend until smooth.
  • Pour it into a bowl and add in vanilla flavor and the remaining icing sugar.
  • Mix it till it reaches spreading consistency.
